Scope of our steel product work

KAF Industries supplies stainless and carbon steel products and dished ends to fabricators, pressure vessel manufacturers and project contractors. We are a trading and sourcing company: material is produced by mills and forming workshops we work with, and our role is to source the correct grade, verify the certification, and deliver it to the fabrication schedule.

The product range covers stainless steel sheet, plate, coil, pipe and fittings, carbon steel pressure vessel plate, and dished ends formed to the common European and American profiles. Dished ends in particular are a specialised item where matching the profile, thickness and straight flange to the vessel design saves significant rework at the fabrication stage.

Certification is the part that most often causes problems on delivery. Pressure equipment work needs material traceable to an EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificate, and a shipment that arrives with the wrong certificate type can hold up an entire project. We confirm the certification requirement at the enquiry stage rather than at delivery.

Grades, dimensions and standards

The table summarises the grades and dimensional ranges most frequently requested. Other grades and sizes can be sourced against project requirements.

ItemTypical specification
Stainless grades304 and 304L (1.4301, 1.4307), 316 and 316L (1.4401, 1.4404), 321 (1.4541), duplex 2205 (1.4462)
Carbon steel plateP235GH, P265GH and P355GH to EN 10028-2 for pressure vessel applications
Structural gradesS235JR and S355J2 to EN 10025-2
Sheet and plate thickness0.5 mm to 3 mm cold rolled, 3 mm to 60 mm hot rolled and plate
Surface finishes2B, BA, No.4 and hot rolled 1D depending on grade and application
Dished end profilesTorispherical to DIN 28011, semi ellipsoidal to DIN 28013, ASME flanged and dished, and 2:1 ellipsoidal
Dished end diameter300 mm to 4,000 mm, with thickness from 2 mm to 40 mm
Material certificationEN 10204 type 3.1 as standard, type 3.2 with third party inspection where required

Grade equivalences between EN, ASTM and other systems are close but not always identical. Where a design code requires a specific standard, we source to that standard rather than to a nominally equivalent grade.

How a steel enquiry is handled

Steel procurement usually fails on one of three points: the grade, the certificate or the delivery date. The sequence below is built around confirming all three before an order is placed.

  1. 1

    Specification review

We confirm the grade, dimensions, tolerance class, surface finish and the design code the material will be used under.

  2. 2

    Certification requirement

The required EN 10204 certificate type and any third party inspection are agreed at the start, because they affect both the mill selection and the price.

  3. 3

    Mill and workshop sourcing

We approach mills and forming workshops able to supply the grade and dimension, and compare on delivered cost, rolling schedule and certification capability.

  4. 4

    Order and production follow up

Once the order is placed we track the rolling or forming schedule and report progress against your fabrication programme rather than waiting for a shipping notice.

  5. 5

    Inspection and documentation

Dimensional checks, certificates and any required third party inspection reports are collected and verified before the material leaves the supplier.

  6. 6

    Shipment and delivery

Transport is arranged under an agreed Incoterms rule, with packing suitable for the material and the destination, and the full document set travelling with the shipment.

Where these products are used

Our steel work is concentrated in pressure equipment and process plant, where certification and dimensional accuracy carry more weight than commodity price.

Pressure vessel fabrication

Certified plate and matching dished ends for vessels built to PED or ASME requirements.

Storage tanks and silos

Plate and dished ends for atmospheric and low pressure storage in process and agricultural installations.

Food and pharmaceutical equipment

Stainless grades and hygienic surface finishes for tanks, mixers and process equipment where cleanability governs the specification.

Chemical process plant

Corrosion resistant grades including 316L and duplex for aggressive media and elevated chloride environments.

Energy and heat transfer

Pressure vessel plate for boilers, heat exchangers and related equipment operating at elevated temperature.

General fabrication

Sheet, plate and pipe for structural and equipment fabrication where consistent supply matters more than single order price.

Frequently asked questions

Do you roll steel or form dished ends yourselves?

No. KAF Industries is a trading and sourcing company. Material is produced by mills and dished ends are formed by workshops we work with. We handle grade selection, supplier selection, certification control, production follow up and delivery.

Which material certificate do we need?

For pressure equipment work, EN 10204 type 3.1 is the normal minimum, since it is issued by the manufacturer's independent inspection department. Type 3.2 adds validation by a third party or the purchaser's inspector and is required by some design codes and clients. We confirm which one your design code demands before ordering.

Can you supply dished ends matched to our vessel drawing?

Yes. Dished ends are sourced against your diameter, thickness, profile and straight flange requirement. Sending the vessel drawing or the head datasheet at the enquiry stage avoids the profile mismatches that otherwise appear during fitting.

What is the difference between 304 and 316L in practice?

The addition of molybdenum in 316 improves resistance to chlorides and many acids, which is why it is specified for marine, chemical and many food applications. The L designation indicates lower carbon content, which reduces sensitisation and intergranular corrosion risk after welding, so it is commonly used on welded fabrications.

What quantities do you work with?

We handle both project quantities for a single vessel or fabrication and recurring supply for workshops with continuous consumption. Mill direct sourcing becomes economical above certain tonnages, and below that we source from stockholders, which we will say openly when quoting.

How long does delivery take?

Stock material can ship within days. Mill rolled material depends on the rolling schedule for that grade and thickness and is commonly six to twelve weeks. Dished ends depend on the forming workshop's load and on whether tooling for the diameter already exists.
